Today Google released the code that is hidden behind the operating system known as Android. They released it only a day before the Android-based T-Mobile G1 phone was ready to be released to the public.

“Today is a big day for Android, the Open Handset Alliance, and the open-source community,’ Google software engineer Dave Bort announced.. “All of the work that we’ve poured into the mobile platform is now officially available, for free, as the Android Open Source Project.”

This decision from Google did not come as a shock to anyone. The company had already released a public roadmap for Android developers that informed them when the source code would be released. The source code package is 2.1 gigabytes and only works under Ubuntu and users will need to have the Git open source version control system.

“This is an exciting time for Android, and we’re just getting started,” Bort concluded. “It takes a lot of work to keep up with the changes in the mobile industry. But we want to do more than just keep up; we want to lead the way, to try things out, to add the new features that everyone else is scrambling to keep up with. But we can’t do it without your help.”
