Samsung To Produce 256GB SSD

Samsung stated this week that they are working on creating a 2.5 inch 256GB solid state drive (SSD) while at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum in Taiwan. According to the reports the SSD will be the highest speed and largest capacity that has been created.

Many of the basic solid state drives that are placed in laptops have a storage capacity of 64GB only. With a sequential read speed of 200 megabytes per second and sequential write speed of 160MBps, Samsung is claiming some of the fastest SSD data transfer rates to date.

Samsung has plans to use the multi-level cell (MLC) technology as well as a high speed Serial ATA (SATA) II interface. It won’t be long though till there is more competition on this front. Intel has already announced their plan to release their own high capacity SSD’s later this year.

Samsung will begin the commercial production of the SSD’s by the end of the year and will have sample for consumers in September.
